Last month, my brother came home to stay with me for a few days. So I took it up on me to show him around. That's when we had gone to Elephanta Caves and many other places. I had also visited the Jahangir Art Gallery and ticked off an item from my Life List. That same afternoon, we had gone to a restaurant and I had for the first time in my life, the English Afternoon Tea!
Before I tell you about my experience, let me first enlighten you with what the Afternoon Tea is and its origins...
Anna, the 7th Duchess of Bedford is said to have had "that sinking feeling" during the late afternoons. At the time people had only two main meals a day, breakfast and dinner at around 8 o'clock in the evening. The solution for the Duchess was a pot a tea and a light snack, taken privately in her boudoir during the afternoon. Later friends were invited to join her in her rooms. Other social hostesses quickly picked up on this excellent idea and invited their friends 'at home' for tea in the afternoon and Afternoon Tea was born.
Afternoon Tea today..
The tradition of 'At Home' has long died out, but the serving of Afternoon Tea continues. Many leading hotels as well as cafes and tea shops, serve Afternoon Tea from about 3pm until 5pm.
So I has my afternoon tea somewhere between 12pm to 1pm and not 3pm to 5pm, because frankly I wasn't so aware of this tradition. I had gone to a tea shop at that time and found the English Afternoon Tea on the menu and just ordered it.
And here is me fully engrossed in my Apple Pie!
This was an interesting experience for me. At that time I didn't know anything about Afternoon Tea or the tradition that surrounded it, but once I came home and looked it up, I was pretty intrigued. And this gave birth to a new Life List Idea- To have Afternoon Tea at the proper time in England, in proper English style (you know with proper cutlery and all)! I know this might not be a big deal to most people, but this is how excited I get about other countries and their traditions. I wanna try it all.
Have you guys tried the English Afternoon Tea? Let me know about it in the comments...
P.S- There was some problem with my Facebook page and then I had to make a new Facebook Page all over again. In the bargain, I lost all my followers. It makes me really sad to look at that page because I hardly have any followers there. If you like this blog, please head over to my Facebook page and join in. Do not feel obligated, but please know that it would mean the world to me if you did.
